The network of connections in
depth, including gaps between the marks that describe the whole image structurally
and rhythmically, interests me. This quality is by nature indirect. I am
uninterested in sharpening surface configurations as a means of gathering
order and holding attention. Surface layers might blur or separate as structures
which lie deeper in the field come into focus, so that the reality of the
painting lies in its sense of depth and flow, its internal circulation. |
